Self Advising
If a student absolutely insists, she can fill out a self-advising slip to waive the right of advising. This occasionally happens when a student demands to take what she pleases. The student will be administratively un-blocked for registration in CAMS. Of course, we hope the student succeeds, if taking much higher course levels then indicated by COMPASS or academic history. However, we have little evidence that students are more successful in these cases, though there have been exceptions. Send the student to the Admissions Office to waive advising.
Non-Degree Status A student can choose to attend FVCC without seeking a degree or certificate because we are open admissions. Placement tests and advising are not required unless taking a course which has a prerequisite. We have many students taking classes for pleasure, workforce related training, recertification, gaining residency (6 or less credits per term for a year), or just testing the water. Usually this is handled through the Learning Center, although there is nothing to prevent the non-degree student from visiting with faculty as well.
